MUSICIAN ROB FLAX AND

DANCER JOY DAVIS

CHANNEL SENSORY DEPRIVATION

FLOAT TANK EXPERIENCE INTO

ETHEREAL FILM COLLABORATION

About the Project

Musician/composer Rob Flax and dancer/choreographer Joy Davis each spent three 90-minute sessions immersed in isolation tanks, and had one month to make a piece inspired by their experiences.

Joy describes her experience: “Floating, dropping through layers of nothing with everything inside of them, underwater sound producing no reverberation, Joy in view but far away - these are a few of our collected thoughts post first sensory deprivation float. The inspiration for this collaboration came in the key of B - a sonic vision of falsetto layered with a whistle humming. We found, through the lightness of the float experience, the density of the sci-fi in the mundane, and multi-dimensional travel through the imagination. We imagined a visual expression of the song not with additive editorial layers or fancy designs, but the fleetingness of ourselves in movement, togetherness, and transformation. “
